some more homemade Beuys...

Here are some more pics i have taken.

I am going to re-do the dressing gown one and add some slippers! i am enjoying doing this and it has kind of made me think differently about the portrait as a piece as well as how reading between the lines is an important part of viewing a piece.

Joseph Beuys. He's the MAN!!!!!

Well, after a pretty productive chit chat with some of my fellow 2nd years, i decided to concentrate on the ideas and emotions evoked by work such as Beuys' "Felt Suit."The idea that a portrait can show everything about a person without showing anything OF the person is a very interesting way to create work; tying in with the whole "less is more" thing. This got me thinking back to when i was young-er...and used to enjoy laying out all my clothes to make it look like a person lying down or sitting, etc. a "Fireman" if you will...( as in the way firemen lay out their uniforms to jump into in an emergency.) I really like playing with this and have had some fun with photo's. These are two of my vacant portraits. Both shot in situ, showing aspects of my daily life and that which is involved in it, without me actually appearing in them.

joseph beuys...

some things i found interesting about him...

/during WW2 he was in the Hitler youth...(compulsary, as it was)

//volunteered for the Luftwaffe in 1940 began his military training as an aircraft radio operator in 1941

///began his military training as an aircraft radio operator in 1941

////On 16th March 1944 Beuys’s JU87 plane crashed on the Crimean Front he wasnt killed, but was injured

i like the luftwaffe thread, i've always liked planes and the like!

new project.

according to the wicked wikipedia...

"Joseph Beuys (May 12, 1921 – January 23, 1986) was an influential German artist who came to prominence in the 1960s. He is most famous for his ritualistic public performances and his energetic championing of the healing potential of art and the power of a universal human creativity. As well as performances, Beuys produced sculptures, environments, vitrines and thousands of drawings. He was also a committed teacher and increasingly devoted much of his energy to German politics. A charismatic and controversial figure, the nature and value of Beuys’s contribution to Western art has elicited a hotly contested and often polarised debate."

So his life was his work. he lived in such a way that his life was transformed into his work. The way he seemed to work was to exhibit and document things that he collected from his life. Rather than painting or drawing his memories or experiences he used personal objects and items that echoed the way he was.

The suit being a kind of self portrait. an echo of himself.

positively posted...

so i have finished the 10 images for tomorrow and they are all printed off and all nice. I am working on the cover design now, but i am having issue finding fitting themes as it is for a collection of such varying ideas. I enjoyed working this week, but what i found hard was getting reassurance that what i was doing was right. I really like my final solutions and i think that the fit the brief well, i have spoken to people from class and shown them my work and i have gotten positive feedback. so thats good. but i DO like the input of tutors though, so i am really looking forward to going in tomorrow.

winter is miserable...

i have been ill for the last few days and i am feeling a bit better, but its got me into a funk about work as i ahvent done any for a couple of days. i am also finding it hard to not get any feedback or inspiration from the tutors, i mean its nice having a free week and all, but i like talking to the tutors and getting ideas. anyway, i am a bit stuck with my work. i'm sure it will pass.

ideas...

i was thinking that i would stick to women's sex toys for my clip-art images. I have kinda got this idea in my head about women's views towards sex nowadays and what it was back when the notion of "clip-art" was first made popular. Looking at the more open attitude towards sex we have now...(there are about a billion sex toys available to women!) another reason i dont really want to do male sex toys is because they are all big rubber fannies! its kinda gross! anyway, i am enjoying this project so far, not too sure about what i have done so far, but to all the images, i am gonna add backrounds and extra aspects to them.

these are two of the images i have done so far.

"Gadget"

"A gadget is a device that has a useful specific practical purpose and function. Gadgets tend to be more unusual or cleverly designed than normal technology."

- Wikipedia. you rock.

sex toys here we come.
I found some clip art that i like, i also went out and bought the "Ready-to-use, Illustrations of Appliances and Electronics" book. its mega cool, the illustrations are amazing, they are so dated!

project two. post uno.

so i have decided to choose "gadgets" as my Contemporary clip-art topic. i started to look at playstations and gameboys and xbox's and ipods and such, but i dont think i like that idea, i have done a few sketches of things, i am kinda in the mindset that i would like to do this project by hand, i havent used the art of a pen for ages!! i am now thinking sex toys and sex gadgets, so today, with holly and jacquie as my escorts, we went into Ann Summers and i got a brochure, (which they charged me 50p for. bloody cheek.) but i like the sex toys idea, i think they will make good little icons/images.

oh....and why would anyone want a toothbrush shaped like a cock? grim.

final part 4

here are my final solutions for part 4.

I am pleased with the end product. i think that it shows the newspaper in it's most basic form, but is still recognisable as The Sun.

FUN WITH CRAYONS!!!!

Here is another idea that leads on from the children's book idea.

4th part

Here are some images of what i have done for part 4. The idea is that the newspaper is totally up for interpretation of the reader and can be changed into whatever the reader wants. I have not changed the layout, but i have gotten rid of almost all the content.

This has NO content in it and can be altered completely

I left the headline on in this version, i think it is more effective and can lead the reader to create more relevant stories. I would like to include a set of crayons with the paper, to follow on from my children's book solution. The idea being that this solution is for the slightly more grown up child and can be given to the more politically aware child "Sun" reader...

Part 3 Post crit post.

Well, my work went down well, i got positive comments from both peers and tutors. (i think) a couple of things that i want to change possibly, the barbie image, maybe have a close-up pic, also i would like to add a free gift, but we shall see what time allows me to do. for part 4 i have started with an idea of TOTALLY deconstructing the magazine and produced the image below. not sure where i can go with it, but i have a seperate idea involving crayons, which leads on from the early learning idea.

end of stage 3

havent posted for a few days, but this is a picture heavy post, showing the different stages of my work. i enjoyed doing this, although trying to keep it "childish" was harder than i anticipated. I think my final solution has come out well and the one that is shown here does not show the pop up sun which conceals the naked barbie, which i have added to the final printed version.

1st solution

I felt this was too busy and too empty at the same time if this is possible. It was too boring.

2nd solution

Colours weren't great and there is too little info on the page.

3rd solution

This is very close to the final solution, with some minor tweaks needed.

Reflections - Week 1&2

Well, group work is over and i think overall the two stages went well. (it didnt help that i couldnt open the CS2 files on my computer, so it was hard for me to do a lot of work on it at home, but hey!) I do think that everyone played a part in the project though, as i did the original layout for the cover, anastazia researched the original fonts, justin smacked it on all the photoshop work, (danish) james worked on the layout with the inner pages and (other) james worked on all the type. I think that even though we were working separately in some areas, our work came together and we were able to produce good final images. I am glad to finally be working on my own with my own ideas. it is a bit stressful as we havent really been excercising our creativity yet as this project so far was about creating an accurate layout, but i am excited about getting into this project properly now. Above is the gun magazine layout with The Sun's content in it. I think it has actually turned out well!

part 2 and 3

Cover

Double Page

Free Gift!!!

The cover for the new layout is going well and i have been having thoughts on the new layouts i will be doing. today, i bought "Spider-Man & Friends, (a terrible kids magazine that shamelessly besmirches Spidey's good name. tch!!!) but i liked the way it looked, PLUS it came with this cool free gift. Which gave me ideas for that too, so i have been working on that a little. The pics in this post are of the Spidey magazine...aimed at kids, but costs a whopping £1.75 may i add!!!

early stage 3 ideas

Since my group has swapped with The Sun with our Gun magazine i have to redesign the magazine with The Sun's content... I had a couple of ideas, one was to redesign it to a broadsheet format, but i think thats a bit overdone and expected. But then on Thursday's lecture with Frank, we talked about how The Sun dumbs down their articles to the most basic level and I had the idea of soing as a children's magazine. So i am off to buy a couple kids magazines tomorrow to take a look at the layout....it would be good to have a free toy with it too i was thinking.

post crit post...

so the cover didnt go down too well, but not because of the layout i dont think, but because of the bad scan resolution and the lack of fonts, but the commercial fonts are too expensive, so we have changed the fonts and layout of them a bit as well as using an image for the magazine logo, (Gun Mart) so it looks better. Also on the original copies we did previously, the colours were eyedroppered from the scan, which evidently is the wrong colour! The one above is the fixed copy that only needs the images changed and that will be done tomorrrow. Left is the copy, right is the original.

No. 5

This is the final version of the layout for the magazine cover. the one on the right is again the original and the one on the left is my version. Troubles: because the original fonts are commercial fonts, my group had to make do with others. such as the use of Impact...(blech..) instead of the correct one for the main bulk og the type. (helvetica neue was considered i think.) another trouble which i only noticed half way through is that the original scan of the magazine was done at 150dpi, which wasnt good to work with in the end. apart from that, layout has turned out quite well i think...

numero qwatrro....

i added drop shadows to make up for the lack of correct fonts...

third post! sun 01:11am

This is the most recent copy of the magazine. the one the right is the original and the one on the left is the copied version.

second post!!!

forgot to say that the reason i am doing this is in order to create a digital InDesign (tm) version of the magazine cover with which we will be doing something else after this stage...

First Project of the second year

This is my first ever blog entry! wow! um, this first thing i did with the project was the above image...it is the simplified layout for the template of a gun magazine! yay! the next thing i did was get together with my group again and pull all our resources together and right now at 00:23am on saturday the 7th of october - this is where the front cover is at... the one on the left is the working copy, the one on the right is the original...
